UNIT 1
Introduction
Welcome to the distance education mode of Unit 1 of the Earth Link Ed Programme. We hope that your group finds this experience interesting, even exciting. We hope, too, that you are willing to having some of your treasured assumptions challenged. We are presuming that you have at least two companions on the journey. Earth Link will also put you in touch with a tutor, whom you can contact before and after each of your meetings.
We encourage you to keep a journal of your learnings, your thoughts and your feelings as you work through the material. It is our expectation that you will write a synthesis paper at the very end of the Unit, share that with your companions on the journey and with your tutor. This is not for any evaluation purposes, but so that you can draw together your own learnings and your sense of this experience.
This material is saved on CD Rom, with text saved as Portable Document Format (pdf) files. Visuals are presented in PowerPoint for the most part. In several places, you are provided with a link to material on the web which will require you to be on-line. You will need to borrow some videos from Earth Link from time to time. At this time, we consider that this material is being made available for limited circulation by those enrolling for the course. Copyright requirements necessitate that the material made available to participants is not then distributed more widely.
The material is presented as a process that your group can work through. The material is presented in blocks of varying lengths. It is recommended that an extended period be allocated to the material from time to time.
